Peyton named "Good Guy"

ST. LOUIS -- Three athletes who are natives of the Gulf Coast are being recognized for their efforts to help the region recover from Hurricane Katrina.

The Sporting News on Friday will name Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning, New Orleans Saints running back Deuce McAllister and Chicago Bulls guard Chris Duhon as winners of its annual "Good Guy" award.

Details will be released in the edition on newsstands Wednesday.

The St. Louis-based publication noted that the athletic world has raised more than $80 million to help relief efforts in the Gulf Coast.

Manning's father, Archie, was the longtime quarterback of the Saints, and Peyton grew up in New Orleans. The Sporting News said Peyton Manning was among the first athletes to fly relief supplies into the New Orleans area, and he donated money to organizations that help the needy.

McAllister, born in Lena, Miss., has directed money and resources into the region and plans to aid New Orleans' educational system and its football programs.

Duhon grew up in Slidell, La., near New Orleans. He organized a relief effort in Chicago that sent a tractor-trailer load of supplies to Slidell soon after the hurricane. He will go back there next month for construction of a Habitat for Humanity house he is co-funding, and for his annual basketball camp.

The magazine also named additional "good guy" winners for the NFL, baseball and the NBA. They are John Lynch of the Denver Broncos for a program that promotes education; Barry Zito of the Oakland Athletics for a program to provide funds for relatives of wounded soldiers; and Andrei Kirilenko of the Utah Jazz for donating more than $300,000 to his native Russia.
