Providing Leadership and Growth Opportunities for Children at Risk

Girls Incorporated of Greater Indianapolis 2011 Strong, Smart, and Bold Summer Day Camp Visit

8:30 AM - 7/15/11

Executive Director of the PeyBack Foundation, Elizabeth Ellis, and Foundation employee Melanie Heaviland were thrilled to be invited to visit a day at Girls Incorporated of Greater Indianapolis 2011 Strong, Smart, and Bold Summer Day Camp.

Housed at The Fall Creek Academy in downtown Indianapolis, Girls Inc. of Greater Indianapolis Strong, Smart & Bold Summer Day Camp is offered in two-week sessions for girls ages 6-14.  The campers are exposed to educational and recreational classes and activities throughout the two weeks that help educate them and empower them to be strong, smart, and bold young women.

During our visit, we were able to sit in on two of the classroom portions of the camp program as we watched a group of 9-11 year olds discuss Disney Princesses in a session on Redefining Beauty and then watched 6-8 year olds in an Economic Literacy program as they role-played a bank transaction and learned the difference between a deposit and a withdrawal.

It was clear from the smiles on the campers’ faces (and at times the noise level in the room) that the girls were not just learning but were having a wonderful time doing so and building strong relationships with their peers and the amazing “camp counselors” who are actually full-time Girls Inc. of Greater Indianapolis staff.

The PeyBack Foundation has been proud to support Girls Incorporated of Greater Indianapolis for the past several years, having just this past spring awarded a $7,500 grant to the organization for use in their summer camp program.  The PeyBack Foundation funds programs that provide children at risk with leadership and growth opportunities that they might not otherwise receive.  It is clear that Girls Inc. of Greater Indianapolis is a perfect partner and offers programming directly in line with our mission.

Girls Incorporated of Greater Indianapolis does not just offer an excellent summer camp experience, but innovative programming all year long both in and outside of school hours.  They depend on more than 150 volunteer program facilitators annually and the need for volunteers is always growing.  If you are interested in making a difference and encouraging young women to be strong, smart, and bold please contact Girls Inc. of Greater Indianapolis to volunteer.

Girls Incorporated of Greater Indianapolis inspires all girls to be strong, smart, and bold, enabling them to be confident in their own skin, prepared for their futures, proud of who they are, and ready to take their place in the world.  If you would like to receive more information about Girls Inc. of Greater Indianapolis please visit www.girlsincindy.org
