Columbus East, Lebanon win late games in tripleheader

Demetrius Graves had been on the Lucas Oil Stadium turf before Friday. Singing, months ago, with Arlington High School's gospel choir.

The senior's second trip to the Indianapolis Colts' home stadium, however, was a little different. Instead of singing, he danced -- around tackles, that is, helping the Golden Knights beat Tech 27-6 Friday afternoon in the opener of the 10th Peyback Classic tripleheader. In the second game, Columbus East defeated Greenwood 37-14, and Lebanon outlasted Mooresville 14-7 in the nightcap.

"(When singing), I had to stand in one spot and actually look up to the crowd," Graves said after the game. "Now, I (had) to pay attention to the field."

Those who were paying attention to Graves -- along with teammate Brian Graves and the Golden Knights' defense -- would have seen a pretty complete performance. Arlington (1-0, 1-0 Indianapolis Public Schools Athletic Conference) jumped ahead 7-0 early on a 12-yard run by junior quarterback Brian Graves. Although Tech closed within one with a first-quarter touchdown (the extra-point attempt failed), an Arlington touchdown on the half's final drive gave the Golden Knights the lead, and momentum (they received the ball to begin the second half).

Graves the quarterback had his share of struggles, throwing interceptions on consecutive passes early in the second half. But he recovered -- and the Golden Knights defense surrendered almost nothing -- making Graves' two fourth-quarter touchdown passes (of 12 and 45 yards, both to senior Ziyaad Sizer) more than enough for Arlington.

Brian Graves finished with four touchdowns, three of them passing. Demetrius Graves carried 26 times for 116 yards, accounting for more than half of Arlington's 216 rushing yards. On defense, the Golden Knights held Tech (0-1, 0-1) to just 80 total yards, including 39 rushing.

Another team that showed its strength was Columbus East, which won its first 13 games last year before falling to eventual Class 4A state champion Cathedral.

Although "inexperienced," according to coach Bob Gaddis, the Olympians (1-0) shook off early struggles for a 30-point third quarter in their 37-14 win over Greenwood (0-1). The Woodmen were led by quarterback Sean Brown's two late rushing TDs.

In the final game, Lebanon didn't let its two losses against Mooresville in 2008 keep it from taking down the Pioneers this time, 14-7. Thanks to a key second-quarter fumble recovery that senior Dustin Shipley returned 18 yards for a touchdown and a pair of 22-yard fourth-quarter completions by Tigers junior quarterback Matt Beard (which led to a 6-yard touchdown run by senior Trent Richardson), Lebanon overcame an early 7-0 deficit to win its season opener.
