The Bishop Chatard and Cathedral high school football programs are two of Indiana's most successful and are separated by just three miles on Kessler Boulevard, making their annual meeting one of the most anticipated regular-season games... but it has seldom lived up to the expectations.

The game and the hype collided on the RCA Dome turf Friday night as Class 4A No. 2 Cathedral took a 20-14 victory from 3A No. 1 Chatard in the second game of PeyBack Classic VII. It was just the second time since 1996 that the game was decided by fewer than nine points.

"We beat a great football team," said Cathedral coach Jim O'Hara, whose team cut its series deficit to 17-15 with its second straight victory. "I wouldn't be surprised if they won the rest of their games, (but) our depth really helped us down the stretch.

"(Quarterback) Bobby Powers was calm and cool and made some great plays. The defense came up big, especially Cameron Koehne down the stretch."

Both teams had success throwing the ball -- Chatard for 192 yards, Cathedral for 121. But for two programs that have appeared in eight state title games each, tied for fifth all time, it was appropriate that this game was decided on the ground.

The Trojans took a 14-6 lead on a 9-yard run by tailback Joe Holland with 7:38 remaining in the game. Quarterback Rob Doyle completed passes of 30, 18, 14 and 6 yards during the drive.

Cathedral opened the ensuing drive with Powers completing three straight passes that, with the help of a personal-foul penalty on the Trojans, covered 49 yards and set up a second-and-1 at the Chatard 19. Two plays later, William Stubbs bulled his way into the end zone from 17 yards out.

On Chatard's next possession, Doyle was sacked on third-and-3 from his 28. That forced a punt and two plays later, Stubbs broke a tackle at the line of scrimmage and ran 44 yards to the end zone. A two-point conversion gave the Irish the 20-14 lead.

"He kicked it up a notch," O'Hara said of Stubbs, who finished with 183 yards on 25 carries. "The defense gave him an opportunity and he brought us home. He's an exciting player."

Doyle was sacked by Mike Purol and Aaron Green on second-and-10 from his 29 for a 10-yard loss, although Chatard gained 5 yards back on a facemask penalty. Doyle was then dropped for a 12-yard loss by Koehne, his last two passes fell incomplete and Cathedral ran out the clock.
