Article Archived: 10/12/2004

Indianapolis Police Officer Timothy "Jake" Laird, who was killed on August 18 in the line of duty, was honored with a special video presentation prior to the second game of the PeyBack Classic. Laird's seven-year old daughter, Kaylee, joined her grandparents, Debbie and Mike, on the field with Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning. Kaylee served as an honorary captain and performed the coin toss.

The Laird family has set up the Jake Laird Memorial Fund to honor Jake by providing funds for local law enforcement agencies in need of new equipment, initiating new programs, officer hardships, etc. A golf tournament will be held in October to benefit the fund.

"Jake is a true hero," Manning said. "He sacrificed his life for the well-being of our city. We are honored to have Kaylee and her family at the PeyBack Classic."

The video featured special messages from Manning, Mayor Bart Peterson, Indianapolis Colts Head Coach Tony Dungy, Indiana Pacers Larry Bird, and Jake's fellow police officers.
